(Apologies for the long post, I'm compensating for it being so long since I did)
I've wanted to replace the stock tractor tires since I got the machine. Despite being dang near bomb proof, they are heavy and don't perform well for my style of riding. So, I finally had the scratch to buy all 5 of the tires I wanted.
I did a lot of research. Was interested in the Bighorn 2.0's for weight savings, but, sidewall punctures were reported. Pitbull Growlers look like an awesome tire, but are expensive. GBC makes a couple of good tires and have good prices, BUT, are still bias. So, I was left with the old standby of the original Maxxis Bighorns, being one of a only a few radials out there.
Now, I took a little risk, I went with the 27 inch tires. Knowing that Bighorns run big already, I knew it was going to be close. I had seen people use the 26 without issue. I got two rear 27x12x12R and three front 27x9x12R (the third front being for the spare). Still, I was surprised at the size difference when they arrived and I had them mounted.
Despite what the old rear sidewalls claim of being a 26 inch tire, they measured about 23.5 inches (unmounted, add an inch with rim). The new rear tires claiming to be 27 inches were closer to 29 (to the top of tread). That was WAY more difference than I had estimated. But, they mounted and fit just fine, they are pretty close to the arches at the top of the trailing arms, we will see if mud can build up at this point. I was unable to fully compress the trailing arm shock, but, I don't think it will rub the finder.
The stock front 'Swamp Witch' tires were adequate. BUT, I had already shredded a sidewall on a piece of rouge metal trash. It opened the tire up like a tin can. So, I had consumed my spare. The stock front's were 25x9x12 and I was concerned about extra work done by the rear diff. If, in the event that I used the 25" spare as a rear replacement, the other tire turning at 27" (really almost 29"). Again, front stock tires measured smaller and the new ones measured larger. BUT! The new taller Bighorn fronts fit and allowed for full turning without rub. Again, I was unable to fully compress the font shock but, I think it will clear.
I am going to pick up a few spare tie rods and tie rod ends. Note, I do think that the larger tire will allow more leverage on the steering system and make it more likely to bend something. BUT, that's OK, the steering system is meant to have the weak links and they are very friendly to replace. Don't ask me how I know.
<<Rear, Note the size difference>>
<<Front>>
<<Rear, Note the closeness to the arches on the trailing arms. Also, the spare carrier needs modifications to carry the new spare off the fender. >>
