So, I had a hard time reading the the numbers at night on the speedo. Since the KPH are the big numbers, MPH small. I looked into replacing the VDO speedo with a MPH dominate one. It's doable, but expensive, I didn't want to reset the hour counter.

Next best thing. Replace the lights behind it. I wasn't a fan of the very yellow color anyways. I ordered some 194 wedge base LED bulbs. They fit in the gauges great. Being a little longer they are a little tricky to get in with the wires still attached. 5 of them are needed, two for the speedo.

I picked up 10 of them for about 10 bucks on Amazon. I wouldn't recommend the cheep ones like i got. One didn't work. I'll see how they hold up to the Tomcar vibrating and shaking the snot out of them.

The gauges are a lot brighter. They are slightly blueish. The pics make it look more so. I've also ordered some red ones. I'll try them out when they come in, but, predict they will look pink.

Push start a CVT?

Got a Warn RT40 as a gift. Don't have a brush guard yet. So I hooked it up on my bench in the garage to test it out Worked great, can't wait to use it.

I know these things draw a lot of current. The RT40 pulls 30 amps with no load. I had already replaced the Tomcar bat with a Optima yellow top. Knowing it could handle deep discharge and thinking the sealed design was good for my off road shenanigans.

Was thinking about using it in a situation where the Tomcar can't run. Like its in deep water. It's flipped over. Or even just extended usage and the 25 amp stator on my Kohler can't keep up. I came up with a good (I think) question....

Can you push start the Tomcar???

I would assume if you got it rolling fast enough, maybe down hill, careful though no vacuum assisted breaks. You could drop it into gear and the clutch shoes could engage hard enough to turn the belt and thus turn the motor over.

What about a ratchet applied to the nut on the driving pully of the CVT? Would that be like the old crank start?

I did notice in a Kholer manual that the EFI system (Bosh Motronic 1.1) should work down to about 7 volts. With the AGM starting type battery going past 10 volts is doable but 7 is as low as you should go. With a system this weak the startor is not likely to work.

(I am not selling this machine, it's not mine, and I don't know the seller. Contact them, not me. This is not a solicitation for them / their post...)

So, I was surfing craigslist and this jumped out at me. A 6 seat'er Tomcar!

Curiosity got to me and I contacted the poster. Yup, real deal, custom made. Was made out of a TM2 and TM4. It has a 36 hp air cooled vtwin.

I thought this "Tomcar Limo" was cool, so I posted it here for others to see. Note, I'm re-posting the pictures with the owner's permission.

Lets start a 'Where have you been this year?' thread for 2013.

Can be as simple as a quick description of Who / What / Where you took the Tomcar. If possible, include a pic of Tomcar on said trail.

I've got a Feb 02 ride report I've been meaning to post up.

I wanted to post a tip for using the Tomcar Talk form here. Since there isn't enough activity to warrant checking in very often. What happens is, a new thread gets started and not looked at by the other active members for a while. I know I was slow to respond to a few in a timely manner.

So, if you want to be notified when there IS a new thread, you can subscribe to a 'Forum'' itself. Then when someone creates a new topic the system will email you a summery of changed threads (Daily or Weekly).

To do this, browse to the Forum you want to monitor. E.g. 'Tomcar Lounge'. and click on Forum Tools. Then, 'Subscribe to this Forum'.

Then, you can chose how often you want to be updated and hit 'Add Subscription'

Do this for each of the main threads you want to follow, like the Lounge and General areas.

This was a quick trip to Brimstone Off Road park.
It started out 16 degrees and frozen then warmed up to 33 degrees and muddy, then 30 degrees and snowing.
But we still had a great weekend ride.

New kicks for my TM25J

(Apologies for the long post, I'm compensating for it being so long since I did)

I've wanted to replace the stock tractor tires since I got the machine. Despite being dang near bomb proof, they are heavy and don't perform well for my style of riding. So, I finally had the scratch to buy all 5 of the tires I wanted.

I did a lot of research. Was interested in the Bighorn 2.0's for weight savings, but, sidewall punctures were reported. Pitbull Growlers look like an awesome tire, but are expensive. GBC makes a couple of good tires and have good prices, BUT, are still bias. So, I was left with the old standby of the original Maxxis Bighorns, being one of a only a few radials out there.

Now, I took a little risk, I went with the 27 inch tires. Knowing that Bighorns run big already, I knew it was going to be close. I had seen people use the 26 without issue. I got two rear 27x12x12R and three front 27x9x12R (the third front being for the spare). Still, I was surprised at the size difference when they arrived and I had them mounted.

Despite what the old rear sidewalls claim of being a 26 inch tire, they measured about 23.5 inches (unmounted, add an inch with rim). The new rear tires claiming to be 27 inches were closer to 29 (to the top of tread). That was WAY more difference than I had estimated. But, they mounted and fit just fine, they are pretty close to the arches at the top of the trailing arms, we will see if mud can build up at this point. I was unable to fully compress the trailing arm shock, but, I don't think it will rub the finder.

The stock front 'Swamp Witch' tires were adequate. BUT, I had already shredded a sidewall on a piece of rouge metal trash. It opened the tire up like a tin can. So, I had consumed my spare. The stock front's were 25x9x12 and I was concerned about extra work done by the rear diff. If, in the event that I used the 25" spare as a rear replacement, the other tire turning at 27" (really almost 29"). Again, front stock tires measured smaller and the new ones measured larger. BUT! The new taller Bighorn fronts fit and allowed for full turning without rub. Again, I was unable to fully compress the font shock but, I think it will clear.

I am going to pick up a few spare tie rods and tie rod ends. Note, I do think that the larger tire will allow more leverage on the steering system and make it more likely to bend something. BUT, that's OK, the steering system is meant to have the weak links and they are very friendly to replace. Don't ask me how I know.

<<Rear, Note the size difference>>

<<Rear, Note the closeness to the arches on the trailing arms. Also, the spare carrier needs modifications to carry the new spare off the fender. >>

Hello from Las Vegas!!

Hi all, I just joined the forum today, as part of my research on the Tomcar. I am looking to purchase one in the next few months. Probably a TM2 gas version. There is a dealer here in Las Vegas with two outlets, so cars and parts shouldn't be too hard to come by.

I've been looking at several UTVs for a while, but the Tomcar blows them all away. I'm not into racing, just a reliable vehicle that I can use in the back country of Nevada.

I'll be asking a lot of questions in the coming weeks, so any input you can make would be great!

Take care,

Vegasgunhand!!
